The spirit of the Tarkine can only be experienced in the being, but we have the next best thing... a collection of outstanding imagery by leading Tasmanian photographers...
Contributing Photographers
The following photographers have contributed their outstanding and visually stunning Tarkine imagery...
Biography:
Born and bred in Smithton on Tasmania’s northwest coast, my early life was spent exploring the bush and rivers in the area. My first pic was of bales of hay in a paddock overlooking Mt Cameron on Tasmanias northwest tip with a Box Brownie camera. I remember it because of the "story" it told, the drama of the bales with the sea as a backdrop. That was the start of a love of the photographic image, in a creative sense.
I gave photography away for some time but with the advent of the ‘digital age’ my enthusiasm was renewed.
My free time is built around the capturing of images of Tasmania, her coastline, her mountains, her rainforests, just generally her beauty. As an off shoot of this pursuit, I started an annual Exhibition, held in Stanley at the Town hall, which has proved exceedingly popular for tourists and locals alike.
Along with landscapes I also love taking family pictures and abstracts. The cameras I use are the Canon400D and the 5D Mk II, accompanied by Canon lenses 28-135, 200, 17-40 and 10-22. I always use polarising filters, and occasionally an ND8 neutral density filter on the 10-22 and 17-40 lenses.

Biography:
I have been teaching myself photography for about 25 years and was initially influenced by the stunning work of Ansell Adams and Peter Dombrovski.
I love capturing the underappreciated natural splendour of our beautiful state; the magnificent rainforests of the Tarkine, the beautiful beaches of the north coast, and the desolate wild power of the rugged west coast.
I have most of this within 30 minutes from my doorstep and the magnificent Cradle Mountain/Walls of Jerusalem National Park is but 3 hours drive away.
I love blocks of colour, big skies, and twilight coastal shots, I like distance compressing telephoto shots & wide angle lens shots. I love experimenting to “see what happens”.
My gear includes a Nikon D90 camera with a Nikon D40 as backup.
My lenses are the Nikkor 18-200mm AF-S VR, Sigma 10-20mm wideangle and the Nikon 50mm F/1.8.

Biography:
I got bitten by the Tarkine bug 12 months ago by my partner Jen’s amazing enthusiasm for the place. "I love the diversity of this great landscape and the challenges it throws my way when I try to capture her intensity".
I use a Sony DSLR and a variety of wide angle, macro and telephoto lenses. The Tarkine is a photographer’s utopia, with amazing forests, dramatic coastlines and pristine wilderness.
Wether it is a Wedge Tailed Eagle in flight overhead, a rare and amazing fungi or ancient Huon Pine, I seem to hardly ever have my camera in its bag, always trying to capture that precious moment in time.

Biography:
Rob Blakers came to Tasmania in 1980 and worked with the Wilderness Society in the campaign to prevent the damming of the Franklin River. This was an extraordinary time in the lives of many people and a campaign that was ultimately successful in its aim of protecting much of Tasmania’s southwest wilderness as a World Heritage Area.
Rob worked as a photographer from this time onwards and in almost 30 years has seen profound damage wrought upon Tasmanian landscapes. The role of photography in showing images that represent the beauty of the endangered natural world underpins Rob’s photographic work.
Images from Rob's collection have been used extensively for nature conservation, and in a wide variety of publications including books, posters, cards, calendars and diaries, and in magazines ranging from New Scientist to Outdoor Australia.
Rob has worked extensively with medium and large format cameras, and also uses a digital stills camera and a high definition video camera.
