Mountain biking
The Tarkine has many opportunities for mountain bike experiences, as there are plenty of four wheel drive tracks and remote gravel roads to explore
Waratah is the best place to base your-self, with a range of short and medium tracks available. You can ride 9km from the Town of Waratah along an old four wheel drive track (Tinstone Creek track) to the abandoned town of Magnet and see the eyrie mine ruins from booming times past.
From here make your way along the abandoned Magnet Tram Line (8km) to the Waratah Road (B23). A short ride of 2.5km along the B23 will take back into the Waratah Township.
Be prepared to get wet feet on this ride as there a few creeks to cross. [Take care crossing waterways, especially after wet periods]. The track is mostly gravel, fairly flat and varies in condition with plenty opportunity for mountain bike challenges such as puddles, mud, pot holes and ditches.
Enjoy the forest and beautiful ferns along Magnet Creek and the Arthur River. Keep your eyes open for the shy white Goshawk.
Allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy this ride, (half to a full day – depending upon your skill level and fitness).
